Haymarket Hotel

The Haymarket Hotel

Top spot for a reasonably priced but delicious afternoon tea – perfect for pre-/post-theatre.

The setting is trad-meets-modern. Old-fashioned furniture is updated with bright colours and bold prints, and the cake tiers are neon perspex. There’s a lot of pink, and it’s quite girly, so better for a gossipy get-together than a romantic tea for two…

The tea itself is pretty traditional, with the occasional surprise such as cup cakes or eclairs. Staff were amazingly accommodating: “I see that table has profiteroles, could we possibly have some…” “I’m not keen on this muffin, can we have a chocolate one instead…” “are there any more salmon sandwiches…”. Top notch – and at £18.50 it considerably undercuts some of its more famous neighbours.

Scone rating: 4 out of 5 (for value combined with taste)

P.S. I recently visited another Firmdale property, The Knightsbridge, hoping for a similar tea-tastic experience. It was nice – served in the little sitting room next to the fire and with space for only six or so settled into the sofas, but the tea was not as generous or quite as tasty. One for a cosy atmosphere rather than going all out for the cakes.
